Confession of a TV producer: in Ukraine it is unprofitable to film your own series, and Russian ones are prohibited

This was stated by the head of StarLightMedia, Volodymyr Borodyansky, as reported by the press service of Kiev Media Week 2016.

Borodyansky explained that the average production of an hour of Ukrainian content is now $30–40 thousand, and a TV channel, even broadcasting it in prime time, will earn only about $5 thousand.

At the same time, it is necessary to spend $60 thousand to produce a “more or less high-quality series,” the head of the media group emphasized.

Borodyansky said that there are now too many channels on the Ukrainian market, and the advertising market “cannot feed them all,” so there should be “only two media groups.” He did not specify which ones exactly.

Let us remind you that, under pressure from the authorities, since 2014, Ukrainian channels have been forced to abandon Russian content. In January of this year, the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine authorized Goskino to prohibit the screening of films with the participation of actors recognized as persona non grata in Ukraine. According to the department's data as of February, more than 420 Russian films were banned from showing in Ukraine.
