Polish President Andrzej Duda visited Kharkov today, where he was met by Petro Poroshenko. The visit took place against the backdrop of cooling relations between Kyiv and Warsaw due to the glorification of UPA militants by the current Ukrainian government. Poroshenko, who looked rather rumpled at the meeting (as evidenced by official photos), suggested that Duda turn his attention to the “common enemy” - Russia.

“I invited Mr. President to Kharkov. A city that is located only 40 km from the Russian border, and where we can demonstrate the results of reforms quite effectively.

It is no coincidence that our meeting today was devoted to security and defense issues, among other things. Coordination of our actions to protect against hybrid Russian aggression. I thanked Mr. President for Poland’s strong position in supporting the sovereignty, territorial integrity and independence of Ukraine.

It was demonstrated from the first minutes of the illegal annexation of Crimea and from the first minutes of Russian aggression in the east of our country.

The issue of strategic partnership between Ukraine and Poland remains unchanged. A foreign policy priority for both Kyiv and Warsaw,” Poroshenko said.

He thanked Poland for supporting “common initiatives to introduce real peacekeepers, and not security guards of the OSCE mission observers” in Donbass.

Poroshenko acknowledged the existence of problems in relations with Poland, however, judging by his speech, Kyiv does not intend to abandon the glorification of Bandera’s supporters.

“We came to a common idea that history should not influence the strategic nature of Ukrainian-Polish relations... So that no one could instill hatred or enmity in the hearts of Ukrainians and Poles. We agreed with Mr. President to increase the level of commissions on historical issues in the near future... the level of the commission should be at the level of deputy prime ministers,” said the Ukrainian president, expressing hope for “quick and significant progress in this direction.”

“There are an endless number of historical heroes who unite us, not divide us. For example, Marshal Pilsudski, whose troops, together with the troops of the UPR, won joint high-profile victories over the Russian-Bolshevik invasion in the 20s of the last century,” Poroshenko said.

Let us recall that Pilsudski promised help to the UPR of Petliura, seeing in it a buffer as a state hostile to Russia and gravitating towards Poland (vassal) state. Interestingly, the Pilsudski-Petliura Treaty stated that Ukraine would recognize Poland within the borders of 1772 - i.e. Warsaw laid claim to a significant part of the current Ukrainian lands.

A bruised Poroshenko blurted out too much to the Polish president near the Russian border.
