Honorary Consul of Moldova in the USA: The West will not fight with the Russian Federation over Crimea, just as it did not fight over Transnistria
Kyiv - New York, March 06 (Navigator, Alisa Filatova) - The analogies between today's events in Crimea and the war in Transnistria in 1992 are obvious, but no one in the West is going to fight with Russia over Ukraine, just as they haven’t for 20 years back for Moldova. Honorary Consul of the Republic of Moldova in New York Mark Mayer stated this in an interview with the Chisinau bureau of Radio Free Europe.

“I think the worst thing that can happen is Russia’s recognition of the bandit regime in Transnistria,” the diplomat emphasized. “This is what seems to be happening in Crimea today: recognition of the separatist government.” In today's situation in the region, it is not known exactly what the United States is ready to do to protect Moldova, but Mayer is inclined to think that the economic factor will play an important role, from which the Republic of Moldova will receive dividends.
“What is happening in Crimea was predictable. Crimea is becoming a new frozen conflict. I don’t think that Russia will annex it in the near future, but it will control it, as it already controls South Ossetia and Transnistria, to the detriment of the people living there,” says the honorary consul of Moldova. – Don’t forget that Russian interests in Transnistria are insignificant compared to their interests in Crimea. How can we explain Putin's behavior other than fear that the only port housing the Russian fleet is in danger of being under Western control? This conflict occurred in order to ensure the security of the port.”
In fact, Mark Mayer is sure, the reality is that no one threatens this fleet. “Putin has a Cold War mentality, he lives in the past. His motivation is to protect Russian citizens in Crimea, but all dictators throughout history have had this approach. Germany had the same motivation when it invaded Poland. No international treaty will approve such actions, whatever the motivation, the diplomat concluded.
