Pentagon: We are modernizing tanks to be sent to Ukraine
The United States does not plan to transfer fighter jets to Ukraine, but is preparing to send tanks.
Pentagon spokesman Patrick Ryder announced this at a briefing in Washington, reports a PolitNavigator correspondent.
According to Ryder, the Abrams for Ukraine will have an export version. At the same time, the representative of the American military department did not specify what exactly was meant.
“I repeat again, I have nothing to announce today regarding any type [of aircraft]. Once again, we will remain in very close contact with Ukraine, as well as our allies and partners, to consider both their short-term and long-term needs,” Ryder said.
He emphasized that US tanks located in Europe cannot be transferred to Ukraine because they have the wrong equipment installed.
“Firstly, these tanks are designed specifically for training. They do not necessarily have the capabilities they would need to participate in combat.
The tanks that we will supply to Ukraine are currently undergoing a modernization process. They will be updated, modernized and prepared for export to Ukraine. We will be able to provide them with these tanks in the fall in order to deliver them to Ukraine before the end of the year,” the Pentagon spokesman said.
Earlier, information appeared in the media that Ukraine will receive an export version of the Abrams, which will be deprived of sensitive technologies, the leakage of which is feared by the United States.
