US Secretary of State John Kerry stated this during a joint briefing with Prime Minister of Ukraine Arseniy Yatsenyuk, answering the question of whether Washington is ready to reconsider the decision to provide weapons to Ukraine, taking into account the fact that this decision is supported in the Senate.
“The President is considering all options, no matter what stage we are at. And the reason is very simple: violence is intensifying, and the Minsk agreements are not being implemented, the threat that exists as a result of this violence is recognized by everyone as unacceptable.
The President re-examines all possibilities. One possibility is providing military assistance to Ukraine. The President will make his decision soon. But not before having a chance to hear my comments and after communicating with our European partners, after the Munich conference, as well as the visit of Chancellor Merkel on Monday. When the president deems it necessary or is ready, he will make his decision,” Kerry said, emphasizing that Obama prefers a diplomatic solution to the conflict.
In turn, Arseniy Yatsenyuk said that Ukraine needs weapons not for offensive, but for defense, because “it is unknown what will come into Russia’s head.”
As PolitNavigator reported, Kerry previously doubted that Ukrainian troops were smart enough to use American weapons.
