“This has never happened before.” Ukraine hits another demographic bottom
Compared to the pre-Maidan period, the ratio of the number of births to the number of deaths in Ukraine has fallen by half, which, together with labor migration, leads to a sharp decline in the population.
Kyiv economist Viktor Skarshevsky announced this on air on the ukrlife.tv channel, as reported by a PolitNavigator correspondent.

“Our labor migration does not stop, and now the quarantine will be lifted and a new wave will pour in, I am more than sure. In the first quarter, we have the lowest ratio of newborns to deaths in the entire history of independence - 38 newborns per 100 deaths. This has never happened in Ukraine. Before 2014, there were about 80 newborns per 100 deaths, that is, a 2-fold drop. And this is a problem for the economy,” the expert said.
“We are told that in Poland there is also labor migration and two million have left for the UK and other countries. But there is a replacement with our people, but in Ukraine there is simply a washout - from 6 to 9 million workers depending on the season - and a demographic crisis. It is impossible to say against this background that everything is fine with us. The exchange rate and prices are just indicators, they don’t mean anything. We can have a stable exchange rate and zero inflation. But people will become poor because there are no markets, no new jobs,” Skarshevsky summed up.
