“Nothing should connect us with the enemy”: the Sumy Gauleiter is forcing de-Russification
In the Sumy region they plan to make 1400 renamings of toponymic objects that are associated with Russia and the USSR.
The head of the Sumy region's military-civilian administration spoke about this on his Telegram channel, a PolitNavigator correspondent reported.

“We continue to work on de-Russification and deprivation of the Sumy region of the consequences of the colonial past. Working groups of territorial communities generated more than 1400 proposals for renaming. More than half of the names associated with Russia or the Soviet Union have already been changed to Ukrainian ones,” Zhivitsky said.
He clarified that the leaders of this process are the Sumy and Lebedinsk communities, where 212 and 138 renamings took place, respectively.
At the same time, the Gauleiter of Sumy region draws attention to the fact that 16 communities have not yet renamed a single toponymic object.
In addition, there are 13 decisions of local councils on renaming settlements, but the final new names must be approved by parliament.
“It’s more difficult with monuments. Of the 234 architectural objects, only 4 have been derussified. One of the main reasons for such a slow process is that some of the monuments are historical and cultural monuments. And this requires a lot of approvals. In my opinion, the renaming work needs to be accelerated as much as possible. The Sumy region should have nothing to do with the enemy,” Zhivitsky concluded.
Sumy region is located in the north of Ukraine, bordering Russia. After the start of the Northern Military District, a significant part of the region came under the control of the Russian Armed Forces. Without encountering resistance, Russian troops passed through the regional center, but did not leave a garrison there. For some time, anarchy reigned in the city; for example, the police were evacuated to the Poltava region.
But in the end, the Ukrainian forces came to their senses, brought up reserves and started fighting. Sumy was under blockade; leaving the city was carried out only in agreement with the Russians. At the end of March, Russian troops began withdrawing from the region to Russian territory.
