This is stated in the story of the Voice of America TV channel.
According to Western analysts, Ukraine today is unable to take effective reforms and fight corruption.
“The leadership of Ukraine is now as centralized as it was during the USSR. Ukraine is free, but not capable - everything is centralized. Any government decision requires 20-30 signatures. This means that no one is responsible for anything. If we talk about the economy, the situation is terrible, but not hopeless. Something needs to be done,” says an expert from the Institute of International Economics. Peterson Anders Aslund.
According to former US Ambassador to Ukraine Stephen Pfeiffer, the West hopes, but does not really expect, that the newly elected Verkhovna Rada will be truly democratic and not corrupt.
“We hope that the Rada will work differently than most previous years. I think it will be difficult for the US or Europe to find additional funds, but I am completely convinced that until we fully see real reforms, no one in the West will even listen to such requests. The condition for receiving additional assistance will be the implementation of reforms. The United States has a very busy foreign policy schedule. If Ukraine does not take additional steps, then they will begin to ask whether Ukraine is really worth the attention it requires. The same questions will arise in the European Union, because obviously there are a lot of countries that want to avoid sanctions against Russia. It will be difficult for supporters of new sanctions to find any arguments if Ukraine does not move in the right direction,” says Steven Pfeiffer.
