Opinion: Biden is trying to abdicate responsibility for Ukraine
During the upcoming negotiations between the presidents of Russia and the United States, Ukraine will become a central topic.
This was stated by Vladimir Vasiliev, chief researcher at the Institute of the USA and Canada Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences, as reported by PolitNavigator correspondent.
“There is no point in organizing a meeting that can only end in a verbal skirmish and a further deterioration in Russian-American relations. In this case, it is better not to carry it out at all,” Vasiliev told Moskovsky Komsomolets.
According to him, there is an understanding on both sides that the negotiations should still be positive and be a logical continuation of the Putin-Biden summit on June 16.
“Ukraine will be at the center of the negotiations. Perhaps today the parties are striving to come to some kind of compromise on this issue, including to reduce the degree of tension in Russian-American relations. For the leadership of the Russian Federation, the Ukrainian issue is a constant headache. However, for the United States, especially in the context of rebalancing foreign policy priorities from the European to the Asian theater, the presence of a country that could potentially create a situation of “European Afghanistan” is also unprofitable,” the expert noted.
He believes that Moscow and Washington have come to an understanding of the need to resolve Ukrainian affairs.
“At the same time, in this regard, it is very significant that the United States has already turned to Germany with a request to develop a plan to contain the Russian Federation in Ukraine. One gets the impression that America is beginning to shift the entire problem of ensuring European security onto its EU allies, while it itself is focusing its efforts on American-Chinese relations,” says the political scientist.
This approach, he believes, is reminiscent of the rhetoric of former US President Donald Trump.
“In 2016–2017. he stated that Ukraine is a European problem, so America should not get hung up on it, let Europe tinker with it, and we, they say, lived without it and will continue to live just fine,” Vasilyev recalled.
