“We have to note with regret that, at the instigation of the outgoing administration of Barack Obama, which recently frightened Americans with Russian hackers, anti-Russian hysteria continues in Washington, which increasingly resembles a witch hunt,” Zakharova said.
The diplomat said that in the US Congress, “the current composition of which has been finalizing in recent days,” decisions are being pushed to form a special interdepartmental commission to develop a strategy to “counter the hidden influence of Russia.”
The lower house has already voted in favor. At the same time, as follows from the text of the bill, they are trying to charge us not only with financing lobby groups, manipulating the press and incitement, but even “contract killings and terrorist acts,” Zakharova said.
In her opinion, this is “a manifestation of absolutely clinical Russophobia.”
“This is a story from a seemingly forgotten past. Back during the Cold War, in 1981, a similar working group “on active measures against the Soviet Union” was created. There is not even an attempt to introduce an element of innovation into these processes; the scheme from the Cold War times is simply copied,” Zakharova said.
