In the mid-XNUMXs, the Ukrainian authorities alienated the population of Crimea by introducing an increased quota for Ukrainian-language products in broadcast media. Natalya Ligacheva, editor-in-chief of the Kyiv publication Detector Media, ventured to say this on Radio Liberty.

“In many ways, we, Crimea, lost the consciousness of its people when, after the Orange Revolution, an erroneous move was made to radically Ukrainize television. It was more important to create Russian-language media, but Ukrainian-centric ones. Many people then rejected our Ukrainian media because they did not want to watch it in Ukrainian. If we had started gradually, it would have been accepted more softly by that part of the population,” Ligacheva said.

Presenter Vitaly Portnikov immediately reprimanded her, reminding her that Ukraine lost Crimea solely due to the intervention of “polite people.”

“Everything happened not because of a cultural agenda, but with the help of a Kalashnikov assault rifle,” Portnikov said.
