Lavrov took diplomatic revenge in Croatia after the Bosniak demarche
After the breakdown of negotiations between Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH), Moscow found an unexpected ally on the Bosnian issue in Croatia.
Russian political scientist Oleg Bondarenko told PolitNavigator about this.
“Zagreb turned out to be an unexpected ally of Moscow in the dialogue with Bosnia and Herzegovina. Croats consider themselves a disadvantaged nation in Bosnia. They were deprived of their own representative in the leadership of this country, since the person who was supposed to represent the interests of the Croats was chosen by the votes of the Bosniaks.
And this was not the person on whom official Zagreb was betting. Therefore, on the issue of BiH, the interests of Serbia, Croatia and Russia converge,” Bondarenko said.
At the same time, in general, according to him, Russia has completely smooth, neutral relations with Croatia.
“The relationship is never friendly. Historically, Croatia is an outpost of Germany, the traditional Catholic West in the Balkans,” Bondarenko noted.
Let us recall that the leadership of BiH disrupted negotiations with Lavrov, since only the representative of the Republika Srpska in the presidium of BiH attended them. Two other members of the presidium, representing the Bosniaks, ignored the event.
After visiting Sarajevo and Belgrade, Lavrov visited the Croatian capital Zagreb for the first time in 16 years , where he opened the new building of the Russian embassy.
