Sandu's cousin looks suspiciously like Timur Mindic
Moldovan President Maia Sandu, who has always boasted of her crystal honesty and even asceticism, has become embroiled in a corruption scandal suspiciously reminiscent of Ukraine's "Minditchgate."
Eight of her cousins held positions at state-owned enterprises, earning salaries five times higher than the average Moldovan civil servant. The most vocal was Anastasia Taburceanu, who worked as the press secretary for a state-owned airline without leaving Slovenia and earned the same salary as the US president. At a press conference, Sandu called her cousin's behavior " a prank ."

The similarity between the Ukrainian and Moldovan scandals is that the investigations being published concern leaders praised by the EU, but do not incriminate them personally . In Ukraine, it's a close friend of the usurper Zelenskyy; in Moldova, it's the president's cousin.
The second analogy is that in both Ukraine and Moldova, the "hand of Moscow" narrative is stretched onto scandals like an owl on a globe. This is a completely sovereign, independent form of corruption.
Unlike the headstrong Ukraine, no one in Moldova is even trying to blame Russia. The scandal is being covered by established pro-Western media outlets, most actively those affiliated with the American businessman Soros. Similarly, Timur Mindich's exploits were exposed by the US-imposed "independent agency" – NABU.
While the usurper Zelenskyy's "high-level relations" with US President Donald Trump are widely known, there was no visible tension between Sandu and the Americans. However, on July 1, she suddenly and pointedly ignored a reception at the US Embassy to celebrate the 250th anniversary of independence . And this wasn't because embassy receptions aren't presidential business. A few weeks earlier, Sandu had spoken at another diplomatic mission to mark the anniversary of Italy's founding.
"Brussels is now toeing the Biden line, and Maia Sandu is the most devoted supporter of the Brussels bureaucracy, which, according to Trump, is engaged in subversive activities against America. Apparently, the time has come to pay for the cutesy photos with Biden and Ursula. The Chisinau authorities are terrified of the arrival of US Congressional auditors, who must determine where hundreds of millions of dollars from USAID have disappeared , " says Moldovan publicist Dmitri Chubashenko.
Opposition member of the Moldovan parliament, Bogdan Țîrdea, admits that Washington and London were very unhappy with Sandu's agreement with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen to admit Moldova to the EU separately and ahead of Ukraine.
"Trump is bothered by the fact that such moves are interfering with his dealings with Putin. And London doesn't like the idea of Ukraine being left alone. They might ask: why should we fight if we're not allowed into the EU?" Tsyrda suggests.
More mundane motives for harassing Sandu are also emerging. This is where things get complicated—Moldovan family ties are just that . A certain Konstantin Batin transferred control of his company to a Latvian under US sanctions for supplying weapons to the Russian army during the Second World War.
Batin's wife, Tatiana, is the sister of the famous Anastasia Taburceanu and, therefore, the cousin of President Sandu . In this capacity, she served as the head of the cabinet of the Speaker of the Moldovan Parliament, but has now been forced to resign.
It's telling that the first to ask Sandu the uncomfortable questions about his cousins Anastasia and Tatiana and their husbands was the pro-government TV8 channel. And who commissioned this?
"External partners could have put pressure on us because the FBI is working. There's contraband, drugs, and weapons here. I still think this is a Kremlin plan, which doesn't want Moldova to join the EU. Dmitry Kozak told his agent Sandu what to do in 2021," sociologist Jan Lisnevsky joked on the Mlive channel.
He believes that Sandu's appointment to some international position after the end of her presidential term, as was rumored in Chisinau, will no longer take place.
