Former TV journalist Olga Chervakova, who now joined the Verkhovna Rada on the lists of the Petro Poroshenko Bloc and took the position of first deputy of the committee on freedom of speech and information policy, spoke about this at a round table held in Kiev on the peculiarities of the work of journalists in the ATO zone.
She recalled that at the time the ATO began, she worked as a journalist on the Inter channel.
“And it was a surprise for us that new categories appeared in our lives, which both Russian and Ukrainian channels began to operate,” the journalist recalls. – It was not clear. Some say “militia,” others say “terrorists” or “militants,” and others say “sabotage groups.” We were forced to get together inside the editorial office and simply decide among ourselves what we call whom. We involved lawyers and representatives of law enforcement agencies in this work, who helped us literally compile a dictionary of how to understand definitions and what words we generally do not use in our reports, because these are ideological clichés used by Russian propaganda.”
The politician suggested that journalists do something similar today.
“This discussion took place within our editorial office, a manual was issued on how to work correctly, what to call whom and in what situation,” the people’s deputy shared her journalistic experience. – This was all verified with lawyers and representatives of the intelligence services. I would like to ask you, dear colleagues, I am addressing journalists, so that the same self-regulation takes place now. Perhaps, after the discussion, it is necessary to work out rules that should become a journalist’s code of ethics so that new standards for a journalist’s work in wartime emerge.”
