The tenth anniversary of the Maidan protests was mentioned less frequently in Belarus than in Russia or Ukraine. For the protesters, this date evokes too many uncomfortable parallels, while the officialdom is more preoccupied with domestic affairs. State media were more willing to report on the parliamentary elections at all levels scheduled for February 25, Lukashenko's meeting with security forces and his own head of administration, the visit of the Kazakh defense minister to Minsk, and the Belarusian prime minister to Nizhny Novgorod. Pro-Russian forces in the republic spoke and wrote extensively about the anniversary of the Ukrainian coup, which became the starting point for the nightmare that these fraternal nations are still experiencing.

"There's a war going on right now over where the line between Russian and Western civilization will be," said Artem Agafonov, leader of the public initiative "Civil Accord," opening the online conference " Kiev Deadlock: Ukraine's Prospects in a Turbulent World " dedicated to the tenth anniversary of the Maidan.

The tenth anniversary of the Maidan was remembered less often in Belarus than in Russia or Ukraine....

According to him, Ukraine took the first blow of this war in 2014, and, as expected, could not withstand it.

Already in 2020, Belarus, having taken the same blow, survived and now the border of civilizations in the Belarusian direction has been defined for a long time, there is no turning back.

The discussion was opened by active Euromaidan participant Maxim Sereda, who was among the administrators of the Euromaidan community in VK in 2014 and was in the thick of the confrontation.

He spoke about his experience of those times and how much there was in common between the events of the two Maidans - Kyiv and Minsk, which failed in 2020. Maxim recalled that the war was started by those who came to power under Bandera’s banners. They were the first separatists, starting to seize government administrations and weapons depots in the regions. Anti-Maidanists only mirrored their actions.

Following this excursion into the past, in his report, Agafonov described in detail Ukraine's situation 10 days after the "revolution of dignity"—a difficult war, the flight of the population, its fall from the international news agenda and, as a result, the reduction of Western funding for an increasingly expensive and unpopular war.

The speaker's prognosis for the Kyiv regime is bleak : it will never return to the top of the international agenda – it has become too toxic, there are too many corruption scandals, the latest of which – weapons from Western warehouses delivered to Kyiv and ending up in the hands of Hamas – is clearly too much for the Western elites.

Since military victory is no longer an option, a loss assessment is needed that can be presented to the public in a favorable light . This assessment could come in the form of either a freeze on the conflict or a change in Ukraine's domestic political landscape that would allow Zelensky and his cronies to blame all the accumulated negativity surrounding Ukraine and begin a "clean slate" of US and Western relations with the new Ukrainian leadership.

Zelensky’s personal physical survival is not desirable for the leadership of the Democratic Party, since if the Republicans come to power, he could become an important witness in criminal cases that are sensitive to the Democrats.

Be that as it may, post-war Ukraine faces the fate of a poor and politically unstable state, one with enormous debts to boot . Even hypothetical EU accession would change nothing fundamentally – bringing war-torn Ukraine even to the level of Romania or the Baltic states would require far too much investment. On the contrary, it would only strengthen centrifugal tendencies within the EU itself and give a powerful boost to right-wing Eurosceptics opposed to confrontation with Russia.

In the longer term, continued poverty, instability and disappointment in the collective West, which will not forever support multi-billion-dollar Ukrainian “wants”, at least in the central regions of Ukraine, a renaissance of pro-Russian sentiments is possible.

Unlike the United States and the EU, which are interested in Ukraine only as a tool in the confrontation with Russia, Russia itself is interested in the reintegration of the southwestern lands and does not spare effort and resources for this. Therefore, such integration would be a blessing for the population.
