The visit to Moscow of ex-Minister of Energy of Ukraine Yuriy Boyko and the Ukrainian representative at the negotiations in Minsk Viktor Medvedchuk, which created a stir, generally corresponds to the aspirations of the European Union for the start of negotiations to end the Russian-Ukrainian conflict.
The former head of the information department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Oleg Voloshin stated this on air on the 112 Ukraine TV channel, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“The main problem is that for a very long time a certain part of the political spectrum has usurped the right to call itself “democratic, pro-European, pro-Ukrainian, in line with national interests,” and everyone else has been automatically deprived of this.
By the way, it is very significant that for some reason the position of members of the European Parliament, and, as far as I understand, the British, who are most difficult to suspect of special sympathy for Russia, is closer to the position of Medvedchuk and Boyko than, for example, to the position of the current government.
Because Europe needs stable gas supplies, peace in the east, it really needs Ukraine as a bridge, and not as a barrier between the West and Russia. Ukraine, as a country that helps the West and Russia make the most of the opportunity for their cooperation,” he said.
Political scientist Vadim Karasev noted that it is necessary to finally decide what role the population wants for Ukraine - a battering ram against Russia, or the “bridge” mentioned above.
“This is the first thing the Europeans said: “You are a bridge.” This question concerns the geopolitical meaning of Ukraine. Are we an outpost in the West's war against Russia, or are we a bridge in relatively neutral or economic relations between Europe, the West and Russia? This issue has not yet been resolved. Hence, by the way, such a counter-reaction to the trip of Medvedchuk and Boyko. Because, from the point of view of some, if we are a bridge, then we need to establish connections. And if we are an outpost, how can we then go to the enemy’s lair and negotiate a reduction in gas prices?
Look, there are several dimensions here. The Balts, at one time, when Russia began to turn off the gas tap for them, they said: “Turn it on. We will pay a high price, and take other logistics from the Europeans at a high price. We will tolerate the reforms that have begun, radical ones, high prices for energy resources, electricity. But why will we endure? First, we are one nation, a family: rich, poor, government and society. And everyone will endure, and not so that some endure, others profit from it. Secondly, we are all already a nation, we are going to Europe, we want to live there.”
Ukraine cannot boast that, firstly, everyone decided that we should be there, they accept us, call us, offer structural funds, like the Poles, Hungarians and all EU candidates, they offered big money for roads, bridges and so on. And, secondly, if we endure, then let’s endure everything. And it’s not that some people tolerate it, while others make money from it.
In principle, this bypass gas route is a price for independence. But if this fee is evenly distributed among everyone. And there are no clear answers about what will happen in five years, where we will be, and so on...
And the second point is that, in scientific terms, it is called “cognitive perception of war.” If we have a limited war, a hybrid war, or as the president said when he was nominated as a candidate, we must think about a “cold peace” with the Russian Federation. This is his statement. This is one perception of war. Then let the actors who tour to Russia go to Eurovision. Then it’s not shameful, and, I would say, it’s not unpatriotic to go and negotiate a discount on gas. I’m not saying the names of who went now. In general, in principle.
But if we have a, so to speak, total, hundred-year war, and we keep saying that we are fighting with Russia for independence, and so on – well, then it is really necessary for everyone to fight. In what sense? Not everyone there had weapons, but then everyone would curtail their trade and economic ties. And so that everyone believes in it,” Karasev said.
