The weakening of the ruble that occurred on Monday (the official euro exchange rate reached 90 rubles one kopeck, the dollar exchange rate exceeded 76 rubles) has “more psychological than real consequences.”

Valeria Kasamara, Vice-Rector of the Higher School of Economics, wrote about this on her Telegram channel, as reported by a PolitNavigator correspondent.

“In the absence of escalation of sanctions rhetoric, the scale of devaluation is limited to 5–6% and has not yet made a significant contribution to inflation dynamics.

Only if a negative geopolitical scenario is realized, overcoming psychologically important levels of the exchange rate can significantly worsen the inflation expectations of households and firms, which will lead to an acceleration of price dynamics,” Casamara wrote.

The ruble may be slightly supported in the near future by the situation on the oil market, as well as the resumption of sales by the Central Bank of the remaining currency as part of the deal to sell Sberbank.
