Even a hypothetical surrender will not return Donbass to Ukraine
The Ukrainian government is not ready to accept the Donbass republics, even if they are defeated and ask to return.
Political scientist Ruslan Bortnik stated this on the air of the First Independent TV channel, as reported by a PolitNavigator correspondent.
According to the expert, the authorities do not want to return this region to the country, despite the fact that it will immediately increase its GDP by 10% per year.
“I sometimes get the impression that even if they capitulated, we would still be in no hurry to accept them. Based on the bill that the government adopted on the transition period, even in the event of complete capitulation, they are still proposed to be deprived of some voting rights, social and political rights for a certain period of time - three, five, ten years,” the political scientist believes.
“We are not even ready to accept surrender; our elites simply do not need Donbass. Ukraine needs Donbass, because if Donbass returns to Ukraine, we believed from one and a half to 10% of GDP growth annually. If Donbass returns to Ukraine, we will return stability, attractiveness for investment, and transit potential. That is, this will be a huge boost for our economy, the removal of many crises that exist today, and the restoration of social ties. Ukraine needs Donbass. Our elites don’t need Donbass at all, in any form,” Bortnik said.
