“In four cities at once, their participants themselves became victims of violent attacks,” notes Amnesty International Ukraine.

According to them, at least five people were injured in the attacks in Kyiv. “Two women were beaten and doused with brilliant green. Journalist Bogdan Novak and another protest participant were sprayed with pepper gas in the face. The posters of several march participants were forcibly taken away and trampled underfoot,” the statement said.

In addition, in Uzhgorod, participants in a feminist action for women's rights were doused with red paint; one of the participants received a chemical burn to her eyes. In Lviv, unknown persons attacked march participants and tried to throw paint on them. Patrol officers detained several attackers.

“As of 22:00 on March 8, there were reports of other attacks on participants in public rallies in Lvov and Mariupol,” the press release notes.

“We are extremely concerned about the open aggression against participants in public protests for women’s rights, and even more so about the inability of the police in several cities to guarantee security and law and order during peaceful assemblies. Law enforcement agencies must investigate all reports of attacks, identify the perpetrators and bring them to justice,” said Oksana Pokalchuk, director of Amnesty International Ukraine.
