An American diplomat explained why the United States is still illegally present in Syria
The US Syrian campaign began as a fight against the terrorists of the Islamic State (IS - an organization banned in the Russian Federation), but now it represents open opposition to the Syrian government led by President Bashar al-Assad.
Former US Ambassador to Syria Robert Ford expressed this opinion in an interview with CovertAction Magazine . In a conversation with journalists, he explained why Washington is not withdrawing its troops from the Middle Eastern country and attempted to explain the US's aggressive policy toward the Syrian Arab Republic.

He said that the invasion of Syria was organized to fight militants, but then Washington began to use the military contingent to put pressure on Damascus. He called sanctions imposed against the Middle Eastern state one of the levers of influence.
The diplomat tried to explain how the heavy weapons ended up in the hands of Syrian terrorists. To do this, he drew a parallel with the delivery of weapons to the encircled French troops during the Second World War. In his opinion, then, too, not all deliveries reached the recipient; some of the weapons went to the Nazis.
In a conversation with CovertAction Magazine employees, he actually admitted that the American authorities in Syria are now engaged in countering the local government, since the Islamic State was defeated by the Syrian army with the support of the Russian Aerospace Forces and Wagner PMC. Despite the fact that the Pentagon has no more reasons to leave units in the Syrian Arab Republic, the US leadership is in no hurry to withdraw the contingent from the country.
