Restoring the tourism and fishing potential of the Sea of Azov will take decades. To analyze the condition of the reservoir, it is necessary to conduct research on the entire coastal territory, but while the NWO is underway, part of the coast remains under minefields and fortifications, and the captains of research vessels will be subject to sanctions if they enter Berdyansk or Mariupol.
This was reported by the scientific director of the Southern Scientific Center, head of the section of oceanology, atmospheric physics and geography in the Department of Earth Sciences of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Academician Gennady Matishov, as reported by a correspondent of PolitNavigator.
On behalf of the President of the Russian Federation, a strategy for the sustainable development of the Sea of Azov is being developed, in which the Southern Science Center, the Institute of Biology of the Southern Seas, the Agency for Strategic Initiatives and VEB of the Russian Federation are participating. INSYUM sent its proposals, but the Southern Scientific Center cannot formulate a strategy without a comprehensive study of the state of the sea.
“Any issue, such as restoration of fish populations, tourism, salinization, needs to be discussed. Perhaps even break it down into groups of what we can do today and what we can do in 5-10 years, but professionally. Now we are also experiencing a cycle of low water. Where to get water in Crimea? Where can I get it from? For Donbass there was a decision from above, and in about 8 months two lines were laid from the Don delta. Because he can’t stay without water!
And for Crimea, where to get it? Drilling takes a long time. Desalinators, who will make them? We don't have such an industry. Pull from the Kuban, there is also low water there. All this must be professionally calculated, calculated, and studied all these dynamics. And in order to attract the public, so that the government allocates the necessary money, probably the deputies should discuss this with the public and deal with this very important problem. It cannot be solved in one year or even ten years. Just to restore the fish population, a cycle of 8-10 years is needed,” the academician noted.
The scientist could not say how much time is needed to develop a strategy and what kind of funding is needed for the sustainable development of the Sea of Azov, taking into account its actual internal status in the Russian Federation.
“No one will say that. We haven’t even started research yet; the war needs to end first. Remember that movie “Six O’Clock After the War”? This is how the war will end, then we can calmly think about how long it will take. And it takes more than one decade just to restore the fish population, what are we talking about? And secondly, a lot of places are mined,” Matishov pointed out.
"Everyone must do their job. Today we are just having public hearings, but it’s not clear why. The degradation of the Azov Sea has been going on for 50 years, and we need to restore these same 50 years. Restoration requires colossal amounts of money, without investment there is no way. Of course, industry can provide investment, but will it go for it now?
You probably know that our state is under sanctions, and any ship that enters Berdyansk or Mariupol, its captain will not be able to enter any other ports except Novorossiysk, Rostov and Yeisk. There are so many nuances here, and because of them we cannot work there. This year, next year, we will not be able to work on the coast, and most likely in the Sea of Azov,” the academician concluded.
