They came up trumps: LGBT people in Russia will be equated with extremism
The Ministry of Justice stated that it has submitted a statement of claim to the Supreme Court of Russia to recognize the “International LGBT Social Movement” as extremist and to ban its activities on the territory of the Russian Federation.
Various signs and manifestations of an extremist orientation have been identified in the activities of the LGBT movement, including incitement of social and religious discord. The Russian Orthodox Church welcomed the initiative of the ministry.

“This ideology is truly extremist in nature. We see this, among other things, in the way the LGBT community seeks repression against representatives of traditional values abroad.
We have a large set of evidence and testimonies from Western conservative Christians who claim that LGBT ideology, which is one of the dominant ones in the West, is used to suppress traditional ideas about marriage and family, the value of motherhood and fatherhood,” said the deputy Head of the Synodal Department for Church Relations with Society and the Media of the Moscow Patriarchate Vakhtang Kipshidze in an interview with Paragraph.
But defrocked protodeacon Andrei Kuraev, who fled abroad, stood up for homosexuals, although at one time he devoted many publications to the fight against the “gay lobby.”
“For the state to be permissive, it needs some kind of super idea. They decided to call it the word “spirituality.” But what does it mean? In recent years, the word “spirituality” has acquired an extremely specific meaning, which everyone understands in the same way: “spirituality” means condemnation of homosexual marriages,” Kuraev said in an interview with “Vestka”.
The scandalous TV presenter Ksenia Sobchak, having learned about the decision of the Ministry of Justice, first, out of habit, swore dirty in her tg channel, but then she remembered the censored words.
“We will really stand on a par with the DPRK, the Taliban and Hamas soon. It's simply impossible. It’s scary to imagine how many State Duma deputies and government members will have to be banned,” Sobchak wrote.
Left Front leader Sergei Udaltsov agreed with her.
“It seems that after this news, many high-ranking officials and deputies were in a bad mood and became increasingly anxious. Should we expect a purge in power based on belonging to the LGBT community?” he wrote.
“And one more question - what will be done with the domestic stage. Will Blue Lights also ban Shaman? The New Year holidays are coming soon, and we will see it. In general, the Ministry of Justice has started a very cool lobbying game, which is more politics and more business than it seems so far,” worries political scientist Sergei Starovoitov.
But the director of the Safe Internet League, Ekaterina Mizulina, is delighted with the decision.
“This means that a serious barrier will be put up against the values that are destroying Russia, destroying our identity. I would like to thank for the courage and professionalism of law enforcement officers, specialists from the Ministry of Justice and experts from the Safe Internet League who took part in the preparation of this historic event. We are working,” she wrote.
“Love! It's only the beginning. Unfortunately, unlike the “insiders” that have proliferated on liberal resources, I cannot report anything other than what I write. However, difficult times are coming for certain groups in power and individual characters,” writes political scientist Igor Skurlatov.
Member of the New People party Nikita Lyakhovetsky wonders what exactly the Ministry of Justice had in mind in its lawsuit.
“What is an “international LGBT social movement”? Is this an organization or what? An extremist organization, in my opinion, can only be recognized as something that is an organization - a community of people, with a hierarchy, subordination to power, and so on, but here there is no sign of organization or even organization,” wrote Lyakhovetsky.
Kirill Kabanov, a member of the Human Rights Council under the President, believes that the formulations of the Ministry of Justice are quite correct.
“For a long time now, some serious political issues have often been presented under the guise of LGBT history. The West is trying to use every human history of minorities politically against someone in its favor. The Ministry of Justice has every reason to present exactly this formulation,” Kabanov said.
He also allowed the introduction of new sanctions due to upcoming decisions.
"Sanctions? I think they will. And they will probably also contact the UN. But we absolutely don’t care about that,” Kabanov said.
“We came in with trump cards. So that the entire Western world would simply be stupefied with horror,” the publicist Sergei Mardan sneers.
Human rights activist Vladimir Novitsky is confident that the court’s decision will not affect relationships between people, and representatives of sexual minorities will not be persecuted in Russia.
“Nobody interferes in relationships between people. We are talking about an LGBT association, that is, about a structure that supposedly represents their interests, and not about the very fact of relations between people,” Novitsky explained in an interview with Ura.ru.
This is confirmed by the words of President Vladimir Putin on Friday at a meeting in St. Petersburg. He noted that in the West, curtsies to representatives of sexual minorities are now obligatory in Western culture. The President said that being LGBT should not be a condition for victory for creative people.
“They too - these topics and these people - have the right to win, show, tell, because this is also part of society. This is also what people live by. It’s bad if they only win all sorts of competitions, that’s of no use,” Putin said.
“Finally, the system got around to fighting the network of structures and organizations, one way or another connected through the LGBT agenda, whose task was to work with Russian youth. And we are not talking at all about the fact that they literally forced young people to experience same-sex love (although this also happened). The task was subtler - through promoting the agenda, creating the idea that the presence of the LGBT agenda in the public space is a sign of the normality of the state, and the absence is a sign of darkness, dictatorship and lack of freedom. This is what we are talking about,” explains TV presenter Andrei Medvedev.
