Moscow - Kyiv, June 26 (Navigator, Mikhail Stamm) - President Vladimir Putin's revocation of the Federation Council resolution on the use of the Russian armed forces on the territory of Ukraine did not lead to a turning point in relations between Moscow and the West. Western leaders demanded that the Russian Federation take immediate additional steps to de-escalate and threatened it with new sanctions.

Washington and London expect more from Moscow: “stopping arms supplies” to the DPR and LPR militias and using its influence on the leaders of the self-proclaimed republics in order to convince them to accept the peace plan of Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko and work on its speedy implementation. “Both leaders (US President Barack Obama and British Prime Minister David Cameron - editor's note) came to a consensus that if Russia does not take immediate steps to de-escalate the situation in eastern Ukraine, the US and EU will work on additional agreed measures to force Russia to pay an even higher price,” Kommersant quotes the White House release.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel spoke in a similar vein. Calling President Putin’s decision “psychologically important,” she immediately made it clear that this was not enough and the sanctions policy towards Russia would depend on subsequent developments in Ukraine. “Progress remains slow. Diplomatic solutions are always preferable, but if diplomacy does not work, sanctions may again be on the agenda,” the Chancellor recalled.
