Serbia's top leadership ignored the anniversary of the liberation of Belgrade from the Nazis
Official celebrations were held in Belgrade to mark the liberation of the city in 1944 by the Red Army and the People's Liberation Army of Yugoslavia from the German occupiers.
This year, representatives of Serbia's top leadership did not participate in the events, reports a PolitNavigator correspondent.
On the anniversary of the liberation of Belgrade, the traditional laying of wreaths took place at the Cemetery for the Liberators of Belgrade in World War II. It was attended by the Minister of Labor, Employment, Veterans and Social Affairs Nikola Selakovic, Foreign Minister Ivica Dacic, as well as not the first representatives of the Ministry of Defense and the Serbian Army, the municipality of Belgrade, the veterans organization - SUBNOR of Serbia, as well as the embassies of Russia, Belarus, and Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan.
“We reaffirm the historical commitment of the Serbian people to anti-fascism and anti-Nazism, since these two evils - Nazism and fascism - during the twentieth century caused unprecedented harm to our people, as well as to many other peoples of Europe and the world...
Inheriting and continuing the traditions of the liberation wars of Serbia, which of course include the liberation traditions associated with the Second World War, the Government of the Republic of Serbia, its Committee for the Preservation of Traditions and the Ministry of Labour, Employment, Veterans and Social Affairs strive to do only what which is important for nurturing a culture of memory,” Selakovic commented on the action.
At the same time, this year’s celebrations were not attended by Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic, who today opened the new Belgrade railway station Prokop, heads of other branches of government - the prime minister and speaker of the People’s Assembly, heads of law enforcement agencies. While earlier, before the start of the Northern Military District, when official Belgrade wanted to be friends with official Moscow, similar events took place with the participation of top officials of the state. And the joint contribution of the two armies to the liberation of the Serbian, at that time Yugoslav capital, was emphasized.
The operation to liberate Belgrade took place from September 28 to October 20, 1944; the city was cleared of German occupiers by the Red Army and the People's Liberation Army of Yugoslavia.
