Volker: Biden is scared that Russia could repeat success with Crimea
The current statements by the US administration about Russia's supposedly imminent attack on Ukraine and calls for its citizens to leave the territory of the latter are dictated by the fear on the part of the States that the scenario of Crimea and Afghanistan may repeat itself.
Former US Special Representative for Ukraine Kurt Volker stated this on Channel 4, reports a PolitNavigator correspondent.
According to Volker, remembering how quickly Crimea became part of Russia and the shame with which the United States withdrew troops and its citizens from Afghanistan, the US government decided to play it safe.
“The United States decided to issue a very loud warning about the Russian threat and I think this was done on purpose because we did not do this when Russia took Crimea. The West seemed to be confused, and Russia simply grabbed Crimea, and we only applied sanctions, and then, after the events, it was too late.
I think this decision was dictated to prevent a repeat of the situation. We need to be loud about this threat to prevent it from happening... Because no one did anything quickly.
This is the first thing that scares people now, and the other thing is the disaster in Afghanistan, where we could not correctly predict how quickly the government would fall. We did not inform the American citizens, partners and Afghans who cooperated with us that this would happen. This created the chaotic and tragic situation that we all watched on television.
So this time the goal was timeliness. If something happens, we warned the Americans in advance,” Volker said.
