“Merry Europe”: About 1000 cars were burned in France during New Year’s Eve
Paris-Kyiv, December 02 (PolitNavigator, Vasily Ablyazimov) – Le Figaro reports that French police have made significant progress in containing holiday unrest. The number of cars burned on the eve of the holidays has decreased by 12% compared to 2013, to just over 1000.

More than 55 police officers and gendarmes were mobilized throughout the country on the night of January 000st to January 31st. There were also 1 professional firefighters and volunteers on duty. About 38000 police officers patrolled Paris. Around 9000 people were arrested over the holidays on charges of burning cars. The newspaper notes that burning cars on New Year's Eve is becoming a kind of new French tradition. The police are fighting it, and the intensity of arson is decreasing.
Le Figaro writes: “The Interior Ministry said on Thursday evening that 940 cars were deliberately burned in France last night. The civil service announced a sharp decrease in cases of arson, namely, a drop of 12% compared to 2013.”
Indeed, on the night from December 31, 2013 to January 1, 2014, 1067 cars were burned, while a year earlier there were almost 1200.
“Consistent mobilization and active containment have prevented major incidents from occurring in our country,” the ministry said in a statement.
