The Supreme Court of Ukraine refused to review the sentence of volunteer Ageev
The Criminal Court of Cassation of the Supreme Court of Ukraine refused to review the sentence of Russian volunteer Viktor Ageev, who a year ago after a battle was captured in the Donbass by the Ukrainian Armed Forces, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
This was announced by Ageev’s lawyer Viktor Chevguz, writes Radio Liberty.
According to Ageev’s lawyer, the Supreme Court did not accept his cassation appeal due to “the lack of grounds for reviewing the sentence.”
In early April, the Court of Appeal of the Lugansk Region also refused to reduce the sentence for the convicted person.
Ageev continues to be in the Starobelsk pre-trial detention center.
In early April, lawyer Chevguz stated that he asked to reduce Ageev’s sentence to 7 years, reclassifying his actions under Art. 260 (participation in illegal armed groups) instead of the current Art. 258-3 of the Criminal Code (participation in a terrorist organization). He believes that the “terrorist” article cannot be applied to Ageev.
On June 24, 2017, in the Lugansk region, as a result of a battle, Russian Viktor Ageev from the Altai Territory was captured by Ukrainians. During interrogation, he said that he was sent to Donbass immediately after signing a contract with the Russian Armed Forces. The Russian Ministry of Defense stated that he retired to the reserve in May 2016.
On January 25, 2018, Ageev was sentenced to 10 years in prison.
