According to the State Secretariat for Migration (SEM), the number of applications for “S” status has increased to 62. The increase is more than 142 applications per day.

This special protective status was activated in the spring of 2022 for the first time since its creation following the wars in Yugoslavia in the 1990s. It is designed to provide the necessary protection to people fleeing war. In addition, it will reduce the burden on the asylum system by allowing applicants to obtain an “S” permit quickly and without going through the classical procedure.

Refugees can bring family members with them. In addition, if circumstances are such that the government does not cancel temporary protection after five years, holders of “S” status will receive a regular Swiss residence permit category “B”. Refugees from Ukraine have the right to start working immediately after acquiring protective status “S”, and children have the right to go to school.

How many Ukrainians live in Switzerland:

Zurich - 10 people;
Bern - 7418;

Canton of Vaud – 5;
Geneva – 3 UAH;
Canton of Friborg - 2132;
Canton of Valais – 2045;
Canton of Neuchâtel – 1 14;
Canton of Jura - 463.

As noted, out of 33 people of working age (from 645 to 18 years), 64 Ukrainians are already working. Almost a quarter of workers (3%) are employed in the hotel and restaurant segment of the market. Almost every fifth (375%) works in the “Planning, consulting, IT” sector. Agriculture and education account for 24% and 17% respectively.

Regarding the number of schoolchildren, the State Secretariat for Migration emphasizes that 17 children (from 263 to 4 years old) received “S” status. In particular, 17 children aged 12 to 648 years old, 4 from 13 to 2 years old, and 336 teenagers from 14 to 15 years old came from Ukraine. There are also 2 children under three years of age currently living in Switzerland.
