If the new Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky does not agree to the terms of the Verkhovna Rada to postpone the inauguration from May 19 to another date, then the Speaker of Parliament Andriy Parubiy will have the right to independently choose the date of the ceremony.
This was stated by the head of the Committee on Culture and Spirituality, Nikolai Knyazhitsky, during the conciliation council of the Ukrainian parliament, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“All those resolutions on the inauguration that relate to the 19th, firstly, do not provide for changes in the calendar. Secondly, the inauguration can only happen if you agree on this date with the newly elected head of state, and if you don’t agree, then you set it yourself, there is no other way.
It cannot be scheduled for the 19th, because the day of victims of political repression concerns the lives of millions of Ukrainians, not just those who died in Stalin’s camps, but also those who were exterminated in Western Ukraine. People's deputies will be at the graves, in the prison on Lontskogo Street, in Demyanov Laz, and it is impossible to mock the memory of people.
I kindly ask you to explain this to the newly elected president, I think he will understand you, any date is suitable, but people cannot be prohibited from going to the graves of those whom Stalin mercilessly destroyed. This approach is all the more troubling, since perhaps someone is deliberately misleading the newly elected head of state by offering him this provocative date in order to disrupt it.
On this day, according to the law, there must be a candle on television, any entertainment programs, and a black ribbon are prohibited. Do we want to hold the inauguration so that the black ribbon will be on television? Obviously, this cannot be done,” the people’s deputy said.
