After the failure of the counter-offensive in the summer of 2023, Western countries stopped providing free aid to Ukraine and moved to a more businesslike position.
Ukrainian political scientist and international affairs specialist Taras Semenyuk stated this on the air of the Vyshka Internet channel, the PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“If at the beginning of the war we showed and talked about the war, and Bucha and Irpen became a certain Rubicon that revealed footage of the real war, then the diplomacy of justice worked very strongly. Now, there is Bucha, and you all must respond to this fairly: sanctions, military assistance, financial support.
This continued until the counter-offensive. When the counteroffensive failed, other processes began in which we began to lag behind. Especially in diplomacy. Diplomacy of interests has begun: “What does it matter to me that we help Ukraine? What is our use?” – Semenyuk said.
“And then business came into play. Slovakia: “We don’t give help, but if our producers sell, then we don’t mind.” Poland is the same: “We love Ukrainians, but the interests of farmers come first, so we are closing the border.” And so for each country you can make such a cross-section. Diplomacy of interests. And it was noticeable when President Zelensky, or the prime minister, somewhere abroad appealed: “You must help us,” such messages came, the Europeans did not understand this. Why should they, why should they do this? – he added.
