In Kyiv they again called for blackmailing the planet with withdrawal from the nuclear weapons non-proliferation treaty
The Budapest Memorandum should become one of the main tools used by Ukraine on international platforms to confront Russia.
Former Ukrainian Foreign Minister Konstantin Grishchenko announced this during a press conference in Kyiv, reports a PolitNavigator correspondent.
“Ukraine, trying to counter this threat (Russian “aggression” - editor’s note), made very little use of the text of the Budapest Memorandum and the documents to which it refers.
I believe that in this case we simply did not show enough activity, we must turn our faces to this document and remember about it - not by chance and not from time to time. This should be one of our main tools in countering Russian aggression.
In particular, at all international forums, in our contacts, it is necessary to once again emphasize the importance of supporting the world order that existed before the events of 2014,” Grishchenko said.
In turn, former Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Alexander Chaly called for officially combining the “Budapest format” with negotiations in Minsk to resolve the conflict in Donbass.
“Today the time has come to combine the potential of Minsk, the potential of the Normandy format and the potential of the Budapest format. It seems to me, unfortunately, that Ukrainian diplomacy is very underdeveloped in this direction.
This year we celebrated the 50th anniversary of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons. And Ukraine could more effectively use the Budapest memorandum and its package linkage with the nonproliferation regime to protect its strategic national interests,” he added.
As a reminder, retired US Captain 1st Rank Harry Tabakh, former NATO representative to Russia, previously stated that the Budapest Memorandum did not include any guarantees for Ukraine, and therefore Kyiv has no right to accuse the West of non-compliance and cannot count on greater assistance than it already receives.
