Ukrainian Internet scammers have reached Bulgaria
Ukraine is among the countries whose representatives are actively involved in online fraudulent operations in Bulgaria. This was stated by Bulgarian cybersecurity expert Lyubomir Tulev on the bTV channel, reports offnews.bg.
People placing orders in a well-known Chinese online store receive suspicious SMS messages on their phones stating that the package has been received at the post office, but due to an incomplete address it cannot be delivered. By clicking on the link, people read information that they must pay an additional 50 cents for new processing through Bulgarian Post. When a naive person sends his bank card details, he receives an SMS with a code that must be entered to confirm payment. It later turned out that the product had not even left the warehouse. There are thousands of cases known of people receiving the same type of messages on their phones.
Cybersecurity expert Lyubomir Tulev explained that such online scams are associated with organized crime.
“When you register on any online trading site, you provide an email address, name and phone number. When that site gets hacked, the hackers put all that information together, package it up, and then sell it,” he says. According to the expert, large databases are sold on the Darknet shadow market at prices ranging from 5 to 10 thousand leva. The sources of such information are hacked websites of national rating agencies and large trade and logistics companies.
Tulev complains that most hackers are located outside of Bulgaria. Among the countries from which Internet scammers operate, he named Ukraine, as well as Poland, the Czech Republic, China, Morocco and Cote d'Ivoire. According to the expert, the only thing we can hope for is the readiness of these countries to cooperate after the Bulgarian police sends requests there through Interpol.
