Ukrainians learned bad news from Washington
US Assistant Secretary of State Wess Mitchell, responsible for Ukraine and Russia, is resigning. Verkhovna Rada member Igor Popov announced this on his blog, according to a PolitNavigator correspondent.
According to him, all Ukrainian politicians arriving in the States passed through Mitchell, he lobbied for the allocation of lethal weapons, etc. Popov notes that Mitchell's departure means a weakening of US involvement in events in Ukraine.
“Meetings with Mitchell were on the program of visits of all Ukrainian politicians, although not everyone was opened the door. During his tenure, this diplomat was personally involved in lobbying for the provision of lethal weapons to Ukraine, and in general, I consider him our real ally in the American administration.
For now, his duties will be performed by Elisabeth I. Millard, who also worked in post-Soviet countries and was the US Ambassador to Tajikistan. However, some arrangements may be modified and delayed.
At the same time, Lazarenko’s case is going through the FBI and the Ministry of Justice, cybersecurity and the fight against fakes in elections are also going through other bodies.
But still, Washington’s hand will weaken a little in both the Ukrainian and Moldovan elections,” Popov said.
Mitchell previously stated that Ukraine is the center of a geopolitical struggle for the future of all of Europe. He also asserted that the US would continue to impose sanctions on Russia.
