Ukraine closes the sky to Russian troops in Transnistria

Moscow - Kyiv, February 23 (PolitNavigator, Mikhail Stamm) - Ukraine, at the request of Moldova, will tighten the entry regime on the border with Transnistria, strangle its economy and begin a blockade of the Operational Group of Russian troops in this republic. The OGRF has still had problems with land supplies from Russia, and now the sky will be closed to them.

A new government has emerged in Moldova. Its platform has removed the strategic partnership with Russia and included a clause on strategic dialogue with the United States. As parliament member Vladimir Tsurkan told NG , this will negatively impact negotiations on the Transnistrian conflict settlement, as the cabinet has set the goal of strengthening the EU and US's influence in the negotiating format at Russia's expense. Meanwhile, Moldovan authorities have instructed Ukraine to close its land border to Transnistria and its airspace to Russia.

“It is important for Ukraine to solve the Transnistrian problem, since Transnistria, they believe in Kyiv, poses a threat to security in the south of the country. Moreover, in Kyiv they believe that the situation in eastern Ukraine was developing according to the Transnistrian scenario. Ukrainian border guards and customs officers will tighten the entry regime on the Transnistrian section of the Moldovan-Ukrainian border and will strangle the economy of Transnistria. And at the same time they will begin a blockade of Russian troops. The OGRF still had problems with land supplies from Russia, and now the sky will be closed to them,” explained Anatol Tsaranu, director of the Center for Strategic Research and Political Consulting Politicom.

At the same time, Kyiv coordinates its actions with Chisinau.

Earlier, US Secretary of Defense candidate Ashton Carter said: “I reject the idea that Russia should be allowed any “sphere of interest.” If this is confirmed, I will continue to encourage US partners such as Moldova, Georgia and Ukraine to enhance their security and military capabilities with NATO."
