The EU needs Ukraine as a “guinea pig” – Russian Foreign Ministry
The EU, and in particular the Netherlands, can use Ukraine as a buffer zone in “Russophobic geopolitical constructions.”

This was stated today by the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry Maria Zakharova, commenting on the statement of the head of the Dutch cabinet, Mark Rutte, about the Russian military threat as a reason to ratify the EU association agreement with Ukraine, despite the fact that at the referendum the relative majority of the Dutch spoke against it.
“The question also arises whether the Dutch need Ukraine as an associated member of the EU in order to make it a buffer state, whose population is destined to play the role of a guinea pig in the Russophobic geopolitical constructions of some European politicians. This may be the case,” Zakharova said.
According to her, the Dutch leadership “continues to pursue the chosen line, regardless of objective reality and common sense considerations.”
“I would not like to think that this mantra about the Russian threat is repeated only to mislead the Dutch citizens who entrusted this man with the leadership of the government,” Zakharova said.
She also drew attention to the fact that the Dutch Foreign Ministry allocated 750 thousand euros for the next year to the embassy in Moscow and the consulate general in St. Petersburg for payments to Russian NGOs “for various kinds of propaganda and openly anti-Russian initiatives that border on direct interference in Russian internal political processes” .
