On Sunday, one of the field commanders of the militia, nicknamed Botsman, said that the Stirol was mined and would be blown up if the Ukrainian security forces continued their attack on the city. The danger is that the ammonia pipeline from Tolyatti to Odessa passes through Gorlovka. The consequences of a possible explosion at a chemical plant are being compared to the Chernobyl disaster.

The owner of the plant, Dmitry Firtash, issued a statement in which he recalled that production processes at the enterprise, including the synthesis and processing of ammonia, were stopped in early May, when the situation in the Donbass escalated. “The enterprise has no reserves of ammonia and other explosive substances. Possible explosions on the territory of the enterprise could destroy production workshops, but will not lead to a chemical accident with serious consequences,” Firtash assured. At the same time, Ukrainian Defense Minister Valeriy Geletey said that the explosion at Stirol would lead to a “tragedy on a continental scale.”

“The threat to all living things will arise not only in the adjacent Ukrainian territories, but has a guaranteed chance to cross into Russian territory,” he noted, calling on everyone who has influence on the situation to provide a corridor for entry to the mined chemical plant of the special forces of the Ukrainian army - in order to carry out mine clearance and remove the threat of man-made disaster.

Geletey received no answer. Yesterday, residents of Gorlovka posted photographs on social networks that showed clouds of black smoke rising above Stirol.
