This was announced by the speaker of the General Prosecutor's Office of Ukraine Andrey Lysenko.

“According to the European Convention on the Extradition of Offenders, the extradition of a person occurs subject to the commission of a crime for which, according to the legislation of the party requesting extradition, a penalty of imprisonment for a period of at least 1 year can be imposed. We now know that Saakashvili’s status has changed - he is already convicted, but the prosecutor’s office of the city of Kyiv, at the request of the Ministry of Justice of Ukraine... is conducting an extradition check regarding Saakashvili at the request of the competent authorities of Georgia. In order to conduct this check and clarify all the circumstances... which may become the basis for refusing to extradite the said person to another state, Saakashvili will be invited to the prosecutor’s office of the city of Kyiv to provide appropriate explanations,” Lysenko said.

According to him, the extradition check has already begun, but there are no special standards regarding the duration of such a check.

“Saakashvili has not yet arrived at the Kyiv prosecutor’s office, he is being invited. At the moment, the process of agreeing on a date with the defense side is ongoing,” informed the speaker of the Prosecutor General’s Office.

According to him, as part of this extradition check, the prosecutor's office of the city of Kyiv sent requests to other government bodies of Ukraine, and the conclusions drawn up based on the results of this check will be provided to the Ministry of Justice of Ukraine to make a final decision on extradition.

As reported, on the morning of January 5, the Tbilisi City Court found Mikheil Saakashvili guilty in the case of “malicious abuse of power” as President of Georgia and sentenced him to three years in prison.
