The publication quotes Angela Merkel, who once again emphasized that there can be no military solution to the conflict in Donbass. The German Chancellor said she wants to ensure peace in Europe with Russia, not against it. Germany has opposed providing military assistance to Ukrainian troops, fearing a worsening of the conflict, which has already cost more than 5000 lives according to official figures alone.
“I cannot imagine a situation in which President Putin is so impressed by military supplies that he considers himself a military loser,” Merkel said.
"A disagreement between Europe and the US," writes The Guardian , "has arisen over how best to counter Putin, as Moscow-backed rebels have made military gains in eastern Ukraine. Barack Obama is under pressure from Congress to send arms to Kyiv. NATO's top military commander, US Air Force General Philip Breedlove, gave a strong signal in Munich that he wants the West to consider sending weapons to Ukraine."
French President François Hollande said that “if we fail to find a compromise, to conclude a lasting peace agreement, we know very well what the scenario will be. His name is war."
Merkel met with US Secretary of State John Kerry, Sergei Lavrov, Petro Poroshenko and US Vice President Joe Biden on Saturday. The main topic is the night talks in Moscow between Putin, Merkel and Hollande. The goal is to find a solution to the crisis before it turns into a major West-East confrontation.
German media have generally welcomed the latest initiatives, emphasizing that time is running out to avoid disaster in Europe. Spiegel Online reports that Merkel will meet Barack Obama on Monday and the meeting "will be decisive for the crisis in Eastern Europe."
“If Merkel fails in Moscow, the US will want to punish Putin,” Spiegel said. The Guardian states: the next few days will be turning points in the crisis in Ukraine.
