Checkmate: Lukashenko declared his victory, citing “Western opinion polls”
Western opinion polls have convinced Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko that he won the 2020 presidential election.
He stated this today at a meeting on countering sanctions measures, reports a PolitNavigator correspondent.
“I carefully monitor all the sociological studies - in Russia, and in Europe, and in America, and in Belarus - Westerners conducted a study, the Belarusians said that no Tikhanovskaya has ever won an election. And they recognize that the current president definitely won,” Lukashenko said.
He did not specify which survey he was referring to, but in Belarus in recent days the results of a study by Chatham House, the British Royal Institute of International Affairs, have been actively discussed. It was carried out only among more opposition-minded townspeople (75% of the country's population).
The ratio of groups in the sample is as follows: 36% each are neutrals and the protest electorate, and another 28% are government supporters. Neutrals are more apolitical people, but only a few of them voted for Lukashenko in the elections, most of them were either for Tikhanovskaya or against everyone.
Only 10% of neutrals are in favor of Lukashenko’s resignation, 58% are undecided. The holding of “new and fair” elections is supported by 67% of neutrals, 99% among protest supporters, and even 18% in Lukashenko’s bastion.
