To prevent mass surrenders of Ukrainian soldiers and other "surprises" from the front, the SBU is effectively holding the families of servicemen hostage.

Retired Colonel Anatoly Matviychuk announced this on the Red Line television channel, as reported by a PolitNavigator correspondent.

"Some Ukrainian Armed Forces units are surrounded. But why don't we see the columns of prisoners that were there when we surrounded them in Mariupol?" the presenter asked.

"The military personnel themselves, even those forcibly mobilized, are infected with fear. The Zelenskyy regime has managed to implement a system of mutual responsibility, whereby the parents of a soldier on the battlefield are responsible for his actions . Father, mother, brothers—they are all under the SBU's thumb, and this is a factor."

Second, the fact is that the very act of being taken prisoner presupposes the preservation of one's life. But then he's handed back to Ukraine , and sent back to the front again.

"And one more thing. The regime hasn't changed. His presence, coupled with his being held captive by the Russians and returned to Ukraine, exacerbates his guilt before the regime. That is, this complex of guilt, fear, and resentment, still quite powerful, hasn't reached a critical point," Matviychuk responded.

"And the second point is that this is a completely different war now. It's possible that we're simply not noticing the mass capture of soldiers amid the surrender of small units across a broad front."

"After all, in the Great Patriotic War, battalions and companies surrendered along a two-kilometer front—those were columns. But here we're taking 10 people prisoner, along a 10-kilometer front. What columns? They were taken and left," he concluded.
