“Unfortunately, they do not understand the psychological world of Vladimir Putin. This is not an accident, and not a mistake that can be corrected by sanctions. In the minds of the Kremlin, this is the highest mission of uniting disunited peoples. Putin is convinced that half of Ukraine is Russian lands, and views his actions as the realization of this mission. On the other side of the scale are statements and sanctions. These are incomparable things,” Illarionov said at a briefing in Kyiv.
“Neither sanctions nor statements by Western leaders are capable of influencing Putin,” says the former adviser to the Russian president.
