Putin praised Merkel - she did not follow Poroshenko’s lead

Russian President Vladimir Putin said that in parallel with the negotiations in the Normandy format, Moscow holds regular consultations with the United States on resolving the crisis in Ukraine. He stated this today, speaking at a meeting of the Valdai international discussion club.

“Yes, discussions are difficult and not very effective. But there is no other format. The Russian position is this: we are not against attracting anyone, including our American partners. But we agreed that our American colleagues and I would work in parallel. My assistant and Ms. Nuland meet constantly,” Putin said.

At the same time, the president highly appreciated the role of German Chancellor Angela Merkel in the negotiations.

“She found arguments and convinced those gathered that we can and should remain on the agreed position and it is impossible to change every time we meet in a year, change what we agreed on before,” Putin said.
