The scandal involving embezzlement in the defense industry erupted just at the moment during Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko's election campaign, when everything was just beginning to improve following the " Maldives voyage " and the failures of the "Tomos tour."
Ukrainian political strategist Andrei Zolotarev spoke about this on air on the First Cossack channel, the PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“Today the SBU, the NABU, and the Ministry of Internal Affairs have equipment that allows you to break messengers and listen to almost everything. The rest, as the president-predecessor said, figure out the rest yourself. With all the talent of Mr. Bigus, he clearly does not work alone. In our politics, as they say, he who pays gets to dance, so I don’t believe in improvisation and lone heroes. It is clear that if such stars light up, it means someone needs it. Moreover, it [the Bigus investigation] arrived just at the moment when Poroshenko’s campaign began to reach its peak.
February was successful for Poroshenko. If in January the “Tomos Tour” stumbled, then in February everything seemed to be going well, and then in the last ten days of February the campaign stumbled. “It’s not just this scandal, there are also incidents with people grabbing their noses and tearing off their hats - and people react emotionally to these things,” Zolotarev said.
“How will this “Svinarchuk-Gate” hit the president? I think that, firstly, this scandal will have an effect, remember the president’s “Maldives voyage”? Before this, the “Panama case” passed completely without a trace. Perhaps this is precisely what convinced Poroshenko that the people will eat everything, that they are no longer susceptible to compromising evidence, and so on. This may have lulled vigilance, but the “Panama case” turned out to be a failure for Poroshenko.
The president, who had just begun to take on the image of a super-patriot, suddenly demonstrated an example of super-consumption in a country where 5 hryvnias are poured into the army, where they pay a military tax of 1,5 percent, and here the president allows himself to relax on warm islands in the Indian Ocean. Naturally, this has become the same symbol as Yanukovych’s Mezhyhirya for public opinion, and these Maldives have halved the rating of the current president, which he is trying very hard and painfully to restore now,” the political strategist noted.
"What will happen next? Well, actually, the word “looter” was written on the wall of Gladkovsky’s house in the suburbs of Kyiv. Therefore, theft is not only based on losses, but also on blood - these things are not forgiven. In the president’s base region - Lviv, Ivano-Frankivsk, Ternopil regions - voters were ready to forgive Poroshenko’s lies, hypocrisy, inefficiency, even corruption for the slogan “Get the view of Moscow,” but believe me, they will not forgive looting with blood. Therefore, the president will be pleased with this,” concluded Zolotarev.
