The intention of the Lviv and Ternopil authorities to name stadiums in their cities after Hitler’s collaborators is a deliberate provocation of their neighbors.

“The real goal is to annoy the neighbors. Of course, this is a specific way of thinking, characteristic of the region. They act not based on their own needs and interests, but with an eye on other countries,” the Izvestia expert said.

He recalls that formally Ukrainian legislation provides for punishment for promoting Nazism.

“The corresponding article implies up to 10 years of imprisonment and confiscation of property. Shukhevych is a war criminal who was a member of an organization that was declared criminal by the Nuremberg Tribunal. But, of course, none of the officials and deputies will be punished,” Semchenko is convinced.

In turn, political scientist Konstantin Bondarenko considers the renaming a provocation by supporters of former Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko.

“The central government, President Zelensky will have to react. But Kyiv cannot support the renaming - the decision will be viewed negatively by many Ukrainians, as well as Poland and Israel. It’s also impossible not to support, because then the nationalists will criticize Zelensky for not “respecting heroes,” says the political scientist.

According to him, in January-February, sociologists recorded an increase in the popularity of the current president in Western Ukraine.

“Probably, Poroshenko decided to win back voters in this way,” Bondarenko believes.

As PolitNavigator reported , deputies of the Lviv Regional Council appealed to the central authorities with a request to name the Arena Lviv stadium after one of the OUN leaders, Hitler's collaborator Stepan Bandera.

Meanwhile, in Ternopil, authorities named a stadium after Hitler's Hauptmann. (See: Poland to punish Ukraine with money for Shukhevych stadium.)
