Masha Gaidar, whom former governor of the Odessa region Mikheil Saakashvili invited to work as his deputy in July 2015, was not engaged in “social tasks” in Odessa, as she stated in the Ukrainian media, but was solving business issues.
This was stated to a PolitNavigator correspondent by political experts who assessed Gaidar’s abdication of powers as a deputy of the Odessa Regional Council.
“What should she do there? Masha's benefactor is already on the run. The new owners don't need it. They took advantage of the girl and it will happen,” comments Donetsk political scientist Vladimir Kornilov.
Masha Gaidar’s departure is connected with some of her personal interests, including business interests, says Pavel Rudyakov, director of the Perspektiva Information and Analytical Center.
“This does not apply to reform issues with which we usually associated Saakashvili and his team. She held on to Odessa for mercantile reasons. Now this has lost its relevance. I have not heard that she actually participated in the work of the Odessa Regional Council. She never had any serious influence on the processes taking place there. But it was used in various complex combinations by local people from Kyiv and Moscow. Of course, she had no real weight in Odessa, she represented nothing as an independent player,” Rudyakov emphasized.
The appearance of Masha Gaidar in Odessa was a PR campaign for Saakashvili, says Yevgeny Filindash, director of the Ukrainian Center for Social Analytics.
“This was Saakashvili’s attempt to demonstrate that the most progressive people from all over the CIS come to work with the Euromaidan authorities. Gaidar was a clear illustration of this thesis of the unity of the Euro-liberals of Ukraine, Georgia and others. It is clear that such a public does not know how to do anything in the real governance of the country. Therefore, Gaidar did not and could not leave any trace of her activities in Odessa. Her departure, like her stay there, did not and will not affect anything in Odessa,” Filindash said.
