In the village of Kovalevka, Poltava region, local residents have been unable to breathe for days from the smoke, reports the newspaper “Ukraina Molada”. Unknown persons, having cleared a corn field, set up artisanal illegal mining right near the villagers' houses. The corn was burned, and in its place a dozen gas and oil extraction towers were installed.
The Poltava region has some reserves of these minerals. It is quite easy to extract gas in the region; it is enough to have small technical devices. Uncontrolled mining can lead to environmental consequences, in particular, the outbreak of numerous fires. Gas was not extracted near Kovalevka, since the Vilkhovshchinsky reserve with rare plants is located here.
Gas and oil production is strictly controlled by Ukraine on its territory, but due to the loss of many functions by the state, illegal extraction of natural resources, including amber, granite, coal, has flourished throughout the country.
UM journalists could not even find out the names of the owners of early-ripening gas production wells, as well as those responsible for control in the Poltava region, “due to the total reorganization of a large number of institutions and departments that previously owned official information.”
