The ostentatious kneeling during the funeral of ATO fighters, which has become widespread in Ukraine in recent years, takes its roots from Galicia, where at one time slaves thus expressed servility to the Polish lords.

Ex-deputy of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Alexey Zhuravko spoke about this on his Facebook page, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.

“Immediately after Euromaidan, a humiliating tradition appeared on the territory of Ukraine - kneeling. At the same time, people are convinced that in this way they pay tribute.

In fact, this pose in no way relates to respect - at all times it was a signal of humiliation, slavery and submission. This tradition has spread mainly in Western Ukraine. This is how it became customary there to greet the bodies of local residents who died in the Donbass and were delivered to their homeland for burial. Such cases are numerous and well known. It is especially wild for a civilized person to see children forced to kneel in the mud.

Where did such savagery come from? After all, it is impossible to even imagine that, for example, Soviet soldiers returning from World War II were greeted on their knees.

In former times, only people in a humiliated position could be brought to their knees - captives, criminals, slaves or the guilty. The Polish lords, to whom all residents of Western Ukraine are now coming so en masse, have taught Galicians to fall on their knees,” Zhuravko wrote.
