The liberation of Kherson will relieve Russia of the need for a landing in the PMR
In the event of a direct threat to Transnistria, Russia will have to launch a landing operation.
Retired Russian special forces colonel Anatoly Matviychuk stated this on air at Komsomolskaya Pravda radio, as reported by a PolitNavigator correspondent.
"In the context of a future peace agreement between Russia and Ukraine, I believe that the issue of Transnistria will definitely come up. Once the issue of Transnistria comes up, by the way, there are 30 thousand Russian citizens there (error... more than 200 thousand Russian citizens live in the PMR - ed.), we will raise the issue of creating a corridor.
Most likely, it will be Odessa, Nikolaev... which should lead us to Transnistria in terms of the passage of both civilian cargo and military contingents.
And I think that today they are trying to somehow, for now in a military-diplomatic way, solve the problem so that we do not end up on this piece of land, then the question of creating a corridor will disappear by itself.
And I think that our politicians, our leaders have long ago formulated this question about Transnistria for themselves. And if we suddenly have to sit down at the negotiating table, it will be one of the most pressing,” Matviychuk emphasized.
He stressed that the Romanian army is already ready to carry out tasks in this region, and the PMR has no chance of repelling such aggression alone.
“The situation today is dangerous, it is not under control due to the remoteness of our troops and the limited number of our contingent there.
Most likely, in the event of an attack on Transnistria, we'll have to perform non-specific functions, such as an amphibious assault or an airborne assault, for which we're unprepared. Because there are no airfields there, and using parachute forces would simply kill the landing force.
"The only way out I see is our advance in southern Ukraine , the capture of Kherson, and an advance to Mykolaiv and Dnipropetrovsk. We need to create a threat to Odesa so that we can then use these trump cards to defeat their decisions," the colonel concluded.
The liberation of Kherson will free Russia from the need for a landing in the PMR.
