"There is heated debate about how this war began. I have no doubt that, from the perspective of international law, it was Russian aggression against Ukraine.

The question is why we, I mean the West, decided to change the status of Ukraine , because for two decades Ukraine was a buffer country.

Then we began to entertain the possibility that they might want to join NATO and the European Union. And the Russians made it clear from the very beginning that if NATO advanced to Russia's borders and accepted Ukraine into its ranks, it would be a pretext for war.

But we ignored this warning. Essentially, we changed the European security system without agreeing to it with the Russians, and they responded with war. This is how I understood the story," Orbán stated.
