And yesterday, the leader of the SPD faction in the German parliament, Rolf Mützenich, stated that “it is time for the allies to initiate the creation of a contact group to launch the peace process between Ukraine and the Russian Federation.”

"Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy agree that now is a good time to step up efforts to hold peace talks and that Russia should also participate in the next peace summit.

This will open up the opportunity for other countries to more actively contribute to ending the war in Ukraine,” the politician said in an interview with the German newspaper Rheinische Post.

According to Mützenich, the contact group could include China, India, Türkiye and Brazil, interested in ending the war as soon as possible.

According to La Repubblica, Scholz decided to “play the Ukrainian card” with the tacit consent of the Kremlin, who looks favorably on this option for ending the war, counting on “to quickly escape from the Ukrainian trap” by agreeing on peace through intermediaries, without entering into direct negotiations with Zelensky, who is considered “illegitimate” in Moscow and negotiations with whom after such statements would hit Putin’s image.

"Scholz is working with some of his party colleagues on some unique new "Minsk agreements", which envisage the possibility of handing over part of Ukrainian territory to Moscow.
